First Week in Canada - Sunday, May 20, 2012

After a week of work, not everything was perfect.
In the first two days, we had no car to go to the map. Nothing problematic.
After that, we've had rain, mosquitoes, millions of mosquitoes and finally the car broke down.
Again this was no problem. We went out to walk and after one hour, we are on the ground to map.
Moreover, everything is perfect. Good accommodation and good food.
We are moralized.
Below, the great car that is now broken.

Map of Wentworth Valley – CANADÁ - Monday, May 14, 2012

After a day trip with stops in London and Montreal, we finally reach the airport in Halifax.
Waiting for us was Mr. Greg and his wife carried us to the HI - Hostelling International (Wentworth Hostel)
This year, because we have to map a large area, came accompanied by Batista.
Due to an unforeseen event, we can only begin our work on Tuesday.
Yesterday, we traveled on foot to the ground I'll map it out if certain criteria.
When we returned, we had walked about 10kms. Good workout.
The base map is not ideal, but it is possible
Weather forecasts are not very bad and we hope that everything goes well.

Fairplay - Friday, May 11, 2012

Fairplay is fortunately a word much used in Orienteering.
We have heard with some regularity of situations in which fair play spoke louder.
In the photo below, I intend to give a image (symbolic) of fairplay.

Prospecting of new terrain for orienteering. - Tuesday, May 08, 2012

Continuing our policy of sustained growth and aiming to increase our offerings of new and varied terrain, we traveled last weekend to a region that seemed to have the natural conditions that we seek.
After we verify several areas, we decided to bet on two, whose pictures show below.
An area fully open or semi-open completely covered with rocks and cliffs. It is one of those areas which appear to be easily seen.
Another area covered with forest of pine forest with some unevenness and many interesting details of stones.
Now all we do, so that in future we can all enjoy this site.

New Map in Canada - Friday, May 04, 2012

Next week I go to Canada (Nova Scotia) to make a new map.
When last year I was working (the map) in Wentworth Valley August2011, Mr. Greg told me that this year would call again to enlarge the map.
I was very pleased and so could not refuse.
I thank Mr. Greg (chairman of Nova Scotia Orienteering Federation) for giving me yet another vote of confidence.
I know it will again be a very tough and challenging. Last year, I lost 9 kgs in a month.
I am willing and prepared for this challenge.

Below, you can see the area to map

Portuguese National Championship Relay - Wednesday, May 02, 2012

On Sunday, he played up the National Championship Relay.
Last year did not participate in these championships to find myself outside of Portugal. Had participated in 2010 and was champion.
Also because I haven`t trained or competed with attendance, placed me on the team B. No problems.
I left for the first leg with the same moral and
despite having made two errors in a total of 4/5 minutes, could give testimony in the second place.
In the end, my team won the third prize.
I think we did a good race so that we can win the A team by a margin rather dilated.

New Map in Portugal - Monday, April 23, 2012

This week, while waiting for my next business trip, I'll start another map in Portugal.
This is the Map where we will realize the MOC2013 (wre).
As I mentioned earlier, this is a field of sand dunes with many gaps and some areas even though they run with relative ease, visibility is reduced.
It is a map with about 6.5 Kms2 and it will make a long distance race and another middle distance.
Below a simple piece of base map.

Map Fuente Atocha - Zarcilla Ramos - Lorca (SPAIN) - Wednesday, April 11, 2012

After three weeks of work without interruption, we are finalizing the map of Fuente Atocha.
This map has a total area of
8.2 Kms2.
2Kms2 were made
by three Mapamakers Czechs and the remaining 6.2 Kms2 were made by me and the other Portuguese Mapmaker.
Situated in the Murcia region, this map is for him to make the race (3 days of Lorca) in October.
It is a terrain with fantastic features for practical orienteering.
Many details of contour lines, lots of rocks, cliffs and dense vegetation more or less, but always easy race.
I advise all people who enjoy challenges, to participate in this event.
Below, I leave a little piece of ground.

Map "Fuente Atocha." - Monday, April 02, 2012

I've been meeting in the region of Murcia, near Lorca, exactly Zarcilla de Ramos.
For starters, S. Peter received us with a very rainy day, accompanied by snow. It's all white around us and the temperatures are too low. It seems that bad weather is chasing us. Hopefully not long.
We came to make a map that was started by two Czechs cartographers.
This map, with an area of 8 km, is intended to realization of the final race of the Spanish league in 2012, (three days of Lorca) to be held next September.
We will use a base map to work and looks good to me. We will see on the ground. The picture also seems to me with good visibility.
The terrain map is located between the elevations (600 and 900 meters)
If all goes well, we hope to finish this job in late April.
After two weeks of work, I can give a very precise idea about the map to the three days of Lorca that will be held in September 2012.
It is a terrain completely covered with pine forest with some open areas. I can say that has all the features to provide an excellent race.

MARRAZES MAP - Sunday, March 25, 2012

After two weeks of work, I finished the new map Marrazes.
Map on the scale of 1:5000 and equidistance of 2 meters.
There was an old map of forest that I had done in 2003 based on a military map and turned now, a map of Sprint and respecting the ISSOM also be used in Precision Orienteering. Thus I, used as a base with a Google picture quality possible. I raised him also a part of the urban village Marrazes.
The part of the forest is whole covered with pine forest with a large part covered with acacia trees beneath the pines, which makes the progression and visibility more difficult.
See you soon;

Next week, next map - Friday, March 02, 2012

After a few more days of waiting, I'll start next week the map of Forest of Marrazes.
This is an area where there is already an old map (2003) made
by me based on a military map.
Now I will make another map to Sprint and Precision Orienteering, respecting the ISSOM.
This is an area of
about 1.5 Kms2 (1Km2 area of forest and urban area 0.5 km2)
Old Map below.

Who said in the Balearic Islands does not fall much snow??? - Friday, February 17, 2012

After 3 weeks of constant work, finally I returned again to Portugal.
I was accompanied by another Portuguese cartographer (José Batista) and did 5 small maps.
We did three forest maps and two sprint maps. The bigest had 1, 3kms2.
I believe that all terrains are good for orientation, but frankly, I liked most of the maps de Galatzo, Sa Riera and Porcincula.
In any of these maps, the best competitors would be satisfied.
As you can see from the photos, the time was very adverse.Even so, I think that we keep our mission.
I would like to thank Miguel Angelo, Francisco and Fernando for all the support that have given us.

coriosidades - Friday, February 03, 2012

Até breve;

Rui Antunes

New Year New Maps - Monday, January 23, 2012

At the moment I am prepared to start another job.Certainly this week
Interestingly I'll start, 2012, where I finished 2011.
It is always a positive for me, when the same club asks me to make another map. If it does is because it is satisfied with my work and this is very important to me.
This is more a work in the Balears Islands and hopefully more this work that give me so much satisfaction as the previous one.

See you soon in the Balearic Islands

For me life does`nt stop - Thursday, January 12, 2012

-In the past, weekend, and some months later, I returned to participate in an orienteering race. It was in Gafanhoeira and despite having no pace that would allow me to run fast, mainly because I was very pleased to amuse me greatly. After a few months standing, was a good incentive to start training again.

-Maps and routes for the 2013 MOC are completed and ready for printing. Simultaneously, because I am also IOF Adviser, I am finalizing the supervision of the International Meeting of Arronches that will take place between 13 and 15 January. Then, I will try to do some training to participate in POM2012. I hope after that restart my activities on mapping.

2013 - February 16/17 - World Ranking Event(MAP) - Saturday, December 31, 2011

Now, I'm finalizing the planning of courses to the MOC2012 (WRE) that will be organized by the Orienteering Club of Centre-www.coc.pt
The next few days will be a lot of work to collaborate with the Organization, making the latest corrections of maps.
Also I have already received the base map to start the new map of Beache of whale Bone to a new WRE to be held in 16/17 February 2013 in Portugal.
The beach of whale bone, is situated in the centre region of Portugal and its forests are similar to de Quiaios and Costa de Lavos Portugal. Just seem less visibility which will make this map more challenging.
I hope to see you there.

I hope so.

First fifteen days in Palma de Mallorca - Friday, December 09, 2011

I am in Palma de Mallorca for 15 days.
The work is going well, but the terrain does not allow much faster.
There are areas too steep and there are other areas that are covered with dense vegetation.
It is the first time I worked in this part of Spain and I'm very excited, hoping that the final work, is pleased to Orienteering Federation of Balears.
I hope to return to Portugal before Christmas.

Hola Rui ¡!!
INGLES
Also wanted to write you to congratulate you for Campdevanol maps.
I am very pleased in every way: contours, vegetation and singular elements. I understood everything that was shown on the map and when I made an error (middle distance) was my mistake because I did not do a correct direction.
I think everyone ended up very pleased with the championship and with maps. It was the impression I got.
I have not spoken much with the organizers because there was no negative complaints on the map. So I think they were all satisfied.
There were many people, more than 400 people participated, including runners from other countries

On September 11, held the Orienteering Championship League of  the France Island.
This race consisted of two legs and took place in the beautiful village of Grez sur Loing.
The responsibility of this organization came from the Balize77 Club, and took place on a map made by me in March 2011. You can see the map with course H21 and a comment from Sandra Olivier, course planner and Strong runner with several podiums  in the championships of France and WMOCs.

Sandra

everyone was super happy with my courses and your map. Some, said the 4000 scale, it would be best to read the fine parks! étainet circles as tight!

Map of Palacios de la Sierra - Spain
More than a finished map. Me and Batista
This map is located in the Burgos region to about 70 Kms
The terrain is an area covered by millennial oaks.
Beautiful area and great for orienteering.
Situated on a hillside and is very technical due to the amount of rocks, cliffs and stones that abound in the southern half of the map.

Commentaire par BRUNO COTTRET sur la carte Catus - Thursday, September 15, 2011

Bonsoir Ruy,

Lady Sandra Olivier opinions about my work - Thursday, September 15, 2011

Asked Madame Sandra will give me your opinion about my work and my way of working.
The Madame Sandra is Director of Balize77 Club and responsible for a project (Recloses, Grez-sur-Loing, Castle Park)

Here let their views, first-person.

Sandra OLIVIER

This short  sprint map had matured in my head for a very long time. The Rui implemented this project with speed and efficiency, always careful with our criticisms and proposals. I'm looking forward to organize the regional championship sprint in this map, hoping the runners will be as pleased as I am.

Sandra Olivier

Recloses to the letter that was on a scale of 1:10,000 and difficult to read because of the rocky areas, Rui did an excellent job on the scale of 1:7.500. It seems he made some progress since his first visit to Le Petit Mont Chauvet and Mare des Pressoir, where he came back voluntarily, to make some adjustments. His company was agreeable, and the "dish Rui" was very good, at last with my help!

Sandra Olivier

Comment about my work - Tuesday, August 30, 2011

Mr. Greg, President of Orienteering Association of Nova Scotia, made at the end, some comments by giving their opinion on what he thinks of my work.
Thank you Mr. Greg;

Thanks for the help with my event!!! Very much appreciated!

Here is my comment:

On August 1st 2011 the Orienteering Association of Nova Scotia, Canada hired Rui Antunes based on what we had seen on his website to complete a 7.5 km area for
a competition. We had an old 1977 map but it was quickly decided that the old map was very bad and that a new map would have to be made from scratch. We were very pleased that Rui could use aerials and local cartography to create a new base map he could work with. He worked very hard and diligently every day he was here, covering some very steep contour areas as a large part of the map is a ski hill. His work is very clear and easy to interpret and follows IOF standards. I am pleased to say we hope to have him back soon to do more work in the area and possibly share him with another club close by in New Brunswick. Rui is a patient man and has a very good sense of humor. He manages very well in English and had no problem with our Canadian food and strange customs. Thanks Rui, it was a great experience!

Flight Cancelled - Monday, August 29, 2011

Right now I'm trapped in Pugwash in Canada a few days, due to the passage of Tropical Cyclone "IRENE."
It's always a bit difficult for me when I finish my work and I can not quickly return to my country.
In this case, the family of Mr. Greg Nix has been exceptional for me.
I'm at home, but as it was in mine.
Everyone has been very friendly and have helped me to forget the moment I can not return.
We will continue to researches the Internet, to check if things are changing.
My flight makes a stop in Philadelphia and I think that exacerbates the problem.
Anyway, the Cyclone also has been felt here, in the form of rain and gusts of wind strong enough and intense.
I hope to return soon.

At least I try!! - Monday, August 29, 2011

It was not easy to drag over this object (small?)
Are they the remains of a vehicle of World War II?
Will the past there was a rally here that was not good to anyone?
Have been growing area in the past? And is lost in some wagon wheels?
Or will have been here a gym? Are the lat pull-dawn?
It was not easy to drag it to the nearest road.
Now, I hope someone with knowledge that pass through there, make an effort to try to pull away.
THE NATURE THANKS
See you soon

Curiosities - Friday, August 19, 2011

In my daily wanderings through the forest every day I see unexpected things.
Or is the previously mentioned garbage, a lot of garbage in some forests of any country. Also I encounter from time to time with the natural inhabitants of the forest. They really like to see.
Stand here today, more unexpected than a curiosity that is registered in the photo below.

Features of the terrain Wintworth Map - Thursday, August 11, 2011

The terrain is quite interesting, because it has constantly changing vegetation type and luminosity. To get an idea in recent days of rain in the afternoon the visibility is very low.
As the base map is already very weak, the difficulties increase substantially.
For the most part is also very uneven and also has some details of relief, rocks and cliffs.
The rest will see the runners, when lingering to run it.

Lots and lots of rain - Monday, August 08, 2011

Definitely, I'm out of luck.
After the problems with the flight, my printer broke down (perhaps due to differences in electric power), but now the rain, heavy rain in August? I honestly did not have one more surprise.
Anyway, this morning I was still working, but after being all wet, I returned to the hotel.
I hope that tomorrow the sun come back because I have a lot of work to do.
I wish much luck to Paul Franco athlete of my club (COC) which will represent Portugal in the WOC to be held in France from the weekend.
Also for all my other friends, I wish much success.

Mapping like loneliness; - Friday, July 22, 2011

Many people, I would say most of the orienteering runners, using a map, and can not imagine even thinking about the necessary steps to that piece of paper to be done.
I refer particularly to the field work.
It is a very thorough job, sometimes very difficult and sometimes also quite dangerous.
Are hours, days and sometimes months of solitude in the woods in search of any detail of interest to print the map.
I personally have the privilege of doing professional level mapping and I feel great pleasure each time I get up in the morning and another day I'll start mapping.
I leave here an example of this loneliness that I speak in the photos are below.

See you soon;

Homecoming - Sunday, July 17, 2011

Finally, I am in my house again.
We finished the maps for the club Aligots and I now have a few days of rest before making another trip, this time a little longer.
Next destination: Canada - Nova Scotia
Also in the latter work, I wish to thank David and Narcis by the deanery have the best conditions to accomplish our work.
It was a pleasure working for this club for the third time. I guess this means we are both satisfied with this relationship that has lasted for 3 / 4 years.
When I conducted the first map to Aligts (Vallfogona de  Ripollès) was a small club with great ambition to grow.
This year, I heard their leaders, telling me with great pride that we are the biggest club in Catalonia.
I am too very happy and give them my sincere congratulations.

Las Lloses - Long Distance Map ( Catalunia Championchips) - Wednesday, July 13, 2011

As I mentioned earlier, this map is very complex and this was done with due care.
This forest is very varied and will require much attention to the runners as required to cartographers.
Large gaps, areas with many details, areas with very low visibility and other difficult or very difficult progression.
I think it is the ideal for long distance.
Here is a small piece of a map of the area more interesting for me.
Thank you for giving me the pleasure of doing so.
Good luck to the organizers and runners.

Rui Antunes

Campdevanol/Média Distancia-Tipo de Terreno/Campdevanol / Midle-Distance Type of Terrain - Tuesday, July 12, 2011

For runners get an idea of the type of terrain they will encounter, here are a piece of map.
Of course, as I said before, there are also other areas where visibility is greatly reduced.
Good luck to the runners and organizers.
Tomorrow I'll put a piece of map of the long distance.

Map of Las LLOSA - Monday, July 04, 2011

Tomorrow Tuesday, will do one month what we are working in the beautiful Ripoll region, near Girona and about 100 kms from Barcelona.
We are working on the second map that is intended to realization the race of Long Distance Championships in Catalonia.
We work at an altitude of 1300 meters and here the terrain is very varied (rocks, stones, details of relief and a lot of slope) and so work is being done very slowly.
I am convinced that this is the perfect ground to find for the best and most complete athletes of Catalonia.
In November, we know them.
See you soon.

Campdevanol(1)MAP OF THE CATALONIA CHAMPIONSHIPS - Monday, June 27, 2011

Day 14, will make one week we will make the first map of Campdevanol.
S. Peter has helped us not and has rained a lot. Therefore, we only get three days work.
We are housed in Sant Joan de les Abbots, a town situated about 15 Kms from the map.
The terrain of the map is very steep with little visibility in some areas. So we have to do the work very slowly.
Today, despite the local weather is going to hear thunder and rain throughout Catalonia, let's try to work the land.

It was very bad idea we went to the ground today.
We decided to walk up the hill and everything was going well. Suddenly, and as announced, first began to thunder and then to rain.
Result: We were completely wet the second time in three days.
Tomorrow we will insist and expect to have more luck.
This first map is where you will complete the proof of the average distance of Catalonia Championships 2011 (Novembro2011)

Commentaire par BRUNO COTTRET sur la carte Catus - Monday, June 27, 2011

Bonsoir Ruy,

Bruno

CAMMAZES MAP: - Monday, June 06, 2011

As planned, after the end of the map (Green Lake-Catus), travel about 200 kilometers to the southeast.
We installed on Camping Soureze.
Here we had a bungalow with excellent conditions for doing our job.
This map is situated at an altitude of 600 meters and was mostly covered with oaks and some other hardwoods.
The base map we used was an old map and ortophotomap.
It is one map that presents no technical difficulties, but which can become very interesting if the course planner careful in their planning.
Being a map physically very demanding and with poor visibility, the planner can take advantage of it and draw some very interesting and challenging courses.
I think this map in the future will surprise even those who already knew him.
I hope yes.

SOREZE (SPRINTMAP) - Monday, June 06, 2011

This map was made based on an old map.

We redid the whole map, using pictures from Google Maps.

Also, the redesigned obey the rules of ISSOM 2005.

A third map of forest that was part of this project was not done because there were problems with the owners of the land.

Thanks to Mrs,

Christian Segonne and Laurent Audouin their cooperation and support they gave us during our work.

Project Campdevanol - Monday, June 06, 2011

07/06/2011 day tomorrow day 07/06/2011, I will travel to region of Girona (Midi-Pyrenees)
I will accompanied by another mapmaker (José Batista) and we will make a map with about 7 Kms
The region is very mountainous, but it seems to me (in the base map) quite interesting and we will put immense challenges. I like that.
Soon, I will give news
Until then.
